German Chancellor Olaf Scholz today arrived in New Delhi for a visit to India from February 25-26.
Scholz is accompanied by senior officials and a high-powered business delegation, and his visit to India is the first standalone one by any German Chancellor since the commencement of the Inter-Governmental Consultation (IGC) mechanism between the two nations in 2011, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a press release.
Germany’s Left Party co-leader Jan van Aken has reignited calls to replace NATO with a new peace and defense alliance that includes both the US and Russia. Arguing that NATO has “no future,” van Aken suggested a cooperative structure similar to the OECD. He also urged the withdrawal of US troops and nuclear arms from Germany. While his party dreams of a demilitarized Europe, Germany continues supplying arms to Ukraine, raising tensions with Moscow. The proposal lands amid rising debate over Europe’s military role and NATO's long-term relevance.
