For customers, crew and cabin bags, we use average weights, which we get from doing this survey, Alastair James, Air New Zealand’s load control improvement specialist, via CNN.

CNN points out that the personal nature of someone's weight makes it something not everyone will wish to have disclosed.

According to the airline, the data has been made anonymous to protect people's privacy.

CNN reports that outgoing passengers will be asked to stand on a digital scale while checking in for their flight.

We know stepping on the scales can be daunting.

We want to reassure our customers there is no visible display anywhere.

No one can see your weight, not even us, Alastair James, Air New Zealand’s load control improvement specialist, via CNN
