UN Warns World's , Worst Polluters Falling Short , of Net-Zero Goals.
The United Nations has warned that the Earth
is on track to hit a "hellish" three degrees
Celsius of global temperature increase. .
'The Guardian' reports that the warning was issued
ahead of the organization's critical COP28 climate
summit next week in the United Arab Emirates. .
2023 has already shattered temperature records. .
Increased temperatures have intensified
heatwaves, floods and droughts, resulting in
the loss of lives and livelihoods around the world.
According to the UN's report, in order to reach the
internationally agreed target of 1.5 degrees Celsius,
22 billion tons of carbon must be cut from 2030 projections.
'The Guardian' reports that the amount needed to be
cut is 42% of total global emissions and equivalent
to the output of the world's top five polluters. .
There is no person or economy left
on the planet untouched by climate
change, so we need to stop setting
unwanted records on emissions,
temperature and extreme weather, Inger Andersen, The UN Environment Program
executive director, via 'The Guardian'.
We must instead lift the needle
out of the same old groove of
insufficient action, and start
setting other records: on cutting
emissions and on climate finance, Inger Andersen, The UN Environment Program
executive director, via 'The Guardian'.
The report cautioned that none of the G20 members
who produce 90% of carbon emissions have taken
actions consistent with their stated net-zero goals.
