2022 Tonga Eruption Pierced a Hole, in Earth’s Ozone Layer, , Study Says.
'Newsweek' reports that the 2022 eruption
of the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Haapai volcano
blasted a hole in the Earth's ozone layer.
.
According to a new study published in the journal
'Science,' the chunk taken out of the Earth's protective
barrier was caused by water vapor from the eruption.
.
On January 15 of 2022, the explosive eruption on the
island of Tonga released 100,000 times more energy
than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.
.
'Newsweek' reports that the new study found
the ozone layer above some regions was depleted
by up to 5% within a single week of the eruption.
'Newsweek' reports that the new study found
the ozone layer above some regions was depleted
by up to 5% within a single week of the eruption.
The impact on the atmosphere was caused by huge amounts
of water, black ash, hydrochloric acid (HCI) and sulfur
dioxide forming towering 34-meter-high plumes of vapor.
Usually there are roughly
four million water molecules
per million in the stratosphere,
and the volcanic plume
contained up to 300, Olaf Morgenstern, Principal atmosphere and
climatescientist at New Zealand's National Institute
of Water and Atmospherics (NIWA), via 'Newsweek'.
'Newsweek' reports that the vapor towers react
with other chemicals ejected by the volcano,
which resulted in a break down of the atmosphere
above the southwestern Pacific and Indian Ocean.
Major volcanic eruptions can
inject gases and particles into
the stratosphere (approximately
15-50 km [9.3 miles to 31 miles]
above Earth's surface) where
the protective ozone layer resides, Laura Revell, Associate professor of physical and chemical sciences at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, via 'Newsweek'.
It is fairly common to see
short-term ozone losses
following a major eruption
as a result of reactions involving
volcanic aerosol and chlorine, Laura Revell, Associate professor of physical and chemical sciences at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, via 'Newsweek'.

children turning 15 this year and younger from
ever being legally able to purchase tobacco.
According to the government, the act of smoking
would not be criminalized, meaning that anyone
currently able to legally obtain tobacco would
be allowed to continue smoking in the future.
If we want to build a better future
for our children we need to tackle
the single biggest entirely
preventable cause of ill-health,
disability and death: smoking, Rishi Sunak, Conservative Prime Minister, via Fox News.
According to the British government,
smoking costs the nation an
estimated $21.63 billion every year.
The proposed legislation also includes
restrictions on vape flavors and packaging
intentionally marketed toward children. .
The new legislation reportedly comes
amid a sharp increase in vape usage
by young people in the U.K. .
In February, similar legislation in New Zealand
was introduced, looking to ban tobacco
sales to anyone born after January 1, 2009. .
That bill was repealed
by New Zealand's new

Delhi Is the ‘Most Polluted’ , Capital City in the World.
The capital of India was found to be the
world's most polluted capital city in 2023,
according to air-quality monitoring group IQAir.
India was also ranked as the
third-most polluted country after
Bangladesh and Pakistan, BBC reports.
In 2022, India was the
eighth most polluted country. .
According to the report, the average level
of fine particulate matter PM2.5 in India's
air was 54.4 micrograms per cubic meter. .
Delhi's air quality had a PM2.5 reading
of 92.7 micrograms per cubic meter.
Air that is considered safe to breathe
typically has 12 to 15 micrograms per
cubic meter of PM2.5, BBC reports. .
Levels higher than 35 micrograms per
cubic meter are thought to be unhealthy. .
Only seven countries were within
the World Health Organization's yearly
PM2.5 guideline, an "average of 5 micrograms per cubic meter or less," BBC reports. .
Those countries are Australia, Estonia, Finland, Grenada, Iceland, Mauritius and New Zealand.

In 2023 air pollution remained a global health
catastrophe, IQAir’s global data set provides
an important reminder of the resulting
injustices and the need to implement the
many solutions that exist to this problem. , Aidan Farrow, senior air quality scientist at

SpaceX's Third Test of Its , Starship Succeeds Ahead, of Crewed Lunar Mission.
'The Independent' reports that SpaceX's third test of its
Starship has ended successfully, with the spacecraft
falling to Earth somewhere in the Indian ocean. .
The successful test follows two
failed tests which lasted only a few
moments before ultimately exploding.
The third test saw the Starship successfully launch,
separate from its booster, arrive in space, open its
payload door and then fly halfway around the Earth.
This means that the test successfully
accomplished all of the major tests
SpaceX had laid out prior to launch.
Starship is the largest and most
powerful rocket ever built, with
a towering height of 397 feet. .
CEO Elon Musk said prior to launch that the
company had made thousands of upgrades and
fixes to improve the chances of a successful test.
