Tom Tugendhat began his leadership campaign launch with an apology on behalf of the Conservative Party. He said: "The Conservative Party owes you better. Politics isn’t a game and we all know the cost when government isn’t sober and serious.” Reflecting on the end of the last government, he added: “I saw duty give way to ego.
