Sweden asks for China's cooperation in probe over damage to Baltic Sea cables
The two cables, one running from Finland to Germany and the other from Lithuania to Sweden, were both damaged in Swedish waters last week, in an area where the Yi Peng 3 bulk carrier was seen.
Sweden has accused Russia of escalating GPS interference over the Baltic Sea, after EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s plane suffered a GPS blackout while landing in Bulgaria. Swedish authorities reported GPS jamming incidents surged from 55 last year to over 700 in 2024, with signals traced back to Russian territory. Officials warn the disruptions, including spoofing with false data, pose major aviation risks. Despite ICAO warnings, the interference continues, with EU leaders holding Moscow directly responsible.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that Moscow continues scientific cooperation with Western experts despite heavy sanctions and political isolation. Speaking in Sarov, Russia’s nuclear hub, Putin insisted that science, like art and sports, cannot be destroyed by politics. He revealed that joint projects persist in nuclear, space, and medical research, even with some NATO states, while new ventures in nuclear medicine are emerging. According to Putin, Russia lost Finland as a partner but continues work with France, Germany, and Hungary through Rosatom. He stressed that Russia still supplies nuclear fuel and services to “unfriendly” countries, hinting that departing partners may eventually return. Putin also warned the West that restricting academic and scientific ties will inflict long-term damage. Despite sanctions, Russia and the U.S. recently extended collaboration on the International Space Station and discussed future lunar and deep-space missions.

A tragic accident has struck Portugal’s capital Lisbon as the iconic Gloria funicular railway derailed on Wednesday, leaving at least 15 people dead and 18 others injured. The historic yellow tram, a symbol of the city and popular with both tourists and locals, crashed on a steep hillside.
Among the victims are believed to be foreign nationals, though identities have not yet been disclosed. Lisbon’s mayor Carlos Moedas called it a “tragic, tragic incident,” while President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed condolences and urged for a full investigation.
The Portuguese government has declared a day of national mourning. Authorities are now probing the cause of the derailment, while questions remain about safety despite claims by the operator Carris that all inspections were up to date.
The Gloria funicular, in operation since 1885, carries over 3 million passengers annually and is one of Lisbon’s most visited attractions. With Britain, Germany, Spain, and the U.S. as Portugal’s top tourist sources, the crash has sparked international concern.
