A tragic accident has struck Portugal’s capital Lisbon as the iconic Gloria funicular railway derailed on Wednesday, leaving at least 15 people dead and 18 others injured.

The historic yellow tram, a symbol of the city and popular with both tourists and locals, crashed on a steep hillside.

Authorities are now probing the cause of the derailment, while questions remain about safety despite claims by the operator Carris that all inspections were up to date.

The Gloria funicular, in operation since 1885, carries over 3 million passengers annually and is one of Lisbon’s most visited attractions.
