A tragic accident has struck Portugal’s capital Lisbon as the iconic Gloria funicular railway derailed on Wednesday, leaving at least 15 people dead and 18 others injured. The historic yellow tram, a symbol of the city and popular with both tourists and locals, crashed on a steep hillside.
Among the victims are believed to be foreign nationals, though identities have not yet been disclosed. Lisbon’s mayor Carlos Moedas called it a “tragic, tragic incident,” while President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed condolences and urged for a full investigation.
The Portuguese government has declared a day of national mourning. Authorities are now probing the cause of the derailment, while questions remain about safety despite claims by the operator Carris that all inspections were up to date.
The Gloria funicular, in operation since 1885, carries over 3 million passengers annually and is one of Lisbon’s most visited attractions. With Britain, Germany, Spain, and the U.S. as Portugal’s top tourist sources, the crash has sparked international concern.

A fast-spreading wildfire has broken out near the scenic beaches of Tarifa in southern Spain, alarming tourists and residents alike. User-generated images captured the flames dangerously close to the coastline as firefighters rushed to the scene. Spain is currently battling its second heatwave of the summer, with temperatures soaring above 40°C across several parts of the Iberian Peninsula. The intense heat, dry winds, and arid conditions have created a perfect storm for wildfires, raising serious concerns for public safety, tourism, and the environment.
Tarifa, known for its stunning beaches and kitesurfing hotspots, turned into a smoke-shrouded danger zone within hours. Authorities have yet to confirm evacuations, but containment efforts are underway. Climate experts warn that such events may become more frequent as Europe faces rising temperatures and extreme weather. The situation remains fluid, and emergency teams are on high alert.
