Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243, an Embraer 190, crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, on December 25, 2024.
The plane, which had been diverted from Grozny due to poor weather conditions and Ukrainian drone attacks, attempted an emergency landing but crashed, killing 38 of the 67 passengers.
Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) has cited "technical external interference" as the likely cause of the accident, though initial reports suggest a possible bird strike or an oxygen cylinder explosion.
The incident is under investigation by Azerbaijani and Kazakh authorities.

The EU-China summit in Beijing ended early as tensions soared over China's deepening alliance with Russia amid the Ukraine war. Despite efforts to focus on trade, climate change, and rare earth supply cooperation, the shadow of Moscow loomed large. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that Beijing's refusal to distance itself from Russia is now the main stumbling block in EU-China relations.
Chinese President Xi Jinping countered with calls for multipolar cooperation and downplayed Western concerns. While there was some progress on rare earth mineral exports and climate action, trade imbalances and mutual investigations remain flashpoints. The summit reflected a growing unease in Europe over China’s geopolitical positioning and its reluctance to leverage influence over Russia. Despite efforts to build trust, Brussels made it clear: Beijing’s stance on Ukraine will define the future of their relations. Dialogue continues, but the cracks are widening as global fault lines deepen.

Mass protests have erupted in Kyiv, Lviv, and other Ukrainian cities despite martial law, with demonstrators accusing President Zelensky of betraying democratic ideals. Anger surged after parliament passed a law curtailing two key anti-corruption agencies, handing more power to a presidentially appointed prosecutor general. Critics warn the move threatens Ukraine’s EU membership path, undermines reforms, and signals a drift toward authoritarianism. Protesters chanted “We chose Europe, not autocracy,” while Zelensky defended the law as a way to remove Russian influence, deepening divisions amid an ongoing war with Moscow.

In a dramatic shift on the global chessboard, Israel and Ukraine have agreed to initiate a joint dialogue aimed at neutralizing the growing threat posed by Iran. Both nations—haunted by Iran’s military exports and nuclear ambitions—announced the new cooperation in Kyiv during Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar’s visit. Ukraine accuses Iran of fuelling Russia’s war machine with kamikaze drones, while Israel views Iran’s nuclear program as an existential threat.
Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga of Ukraine declared Iran a “global security menace,” and thanked Israel for its surprise strike on Iranian military targets last month. The move marks a pivotal tightening of Israel–Ukraine ties, despite past tensions over Israel’s neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine war. Both countries have now drawn a clear red line around Tehran’s expanding influence—and plan to counter it. The anti-Iran dialogue could reshape the Middle East–Eastern Europe dynamic in the months ahead.
