Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243, an Embraer 190, crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, on December 25, 2024.
The plane, which had been diverted from Grozny due to poor weather conditions and Ukrainian drone attacks, attempted an emergency landing but crashed, killing 38 of the 67 passengers.
Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) has cited "technical external interference" as the likely cause of the accident, though initial reports suggest a possible bird strike or an oxygen cylinder explosion.
The incident is under investigation by Azerbaijani and Kazakh authorities.

Russia has reportedly entered Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, expanding its war zone beyond Donetsk. While Kyiv dismisses the claim as propaganda, military analysts confirm geolocation evidence of Russian advances. The strategic push threatens to encircle Pokrovsk and compromise Ukrainian defenses. This penetration, though limited, could escalate the war and shift negotiations. Western experts warn of summer offensives as Russia aims to isolate key cities and tighten its grip on southeastern Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military holds firm, but the situation on the Dnipro front grows increasingly tense.

Trump reportedly plans to send undocumented migrants—including Ukrainian war refugees—to Guantanamo Bay, a military facility infamous for holding terror suspects. The Biden-era program that offered sanctuary to Ukrainians fleeing war may be rolled back, with deportation or detention now on the table. Medical screenings for 9,000 detainees are underway ahead of transfers to Cuba. The move is part of Trump's broader immigration crackdown—targeting 3,000 arrests a day—and could revoke protections for 240,000 Ukrainians. The use of Guantanamo has sparked outrage due to its controversial history and lack of foreign government notification.
