Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe, 39, a rising star in the right-wing opposition and potential 2026 presidential candidate, has died after being shot in the head during a rally in Bogota on June 7. The attack, carried out in front of supporters, left Uribe critically injured until his death was confirmed Monday by his family.
Police say five suspects have been arrested, including a 15-year-old alleged hitman, and Elder Jose Arteaga Hernandez, accused of orchestrating the plot. Authorities allege Hernandez, with a criminal history and Interpol file, arranged every stage of the attack, hiring the shooter and supplying the weapon. Colombian officials claim the killing was negotiated for around $250,000. Uribe, a member of the Democratic Center party, had announced his presidential ambitions in October last year, making his assassination a chilling blow to Colombiaโs political landscape.
