Robust purchase may burden govt with 2x rice buffer stock

IndiaTimes Sunday, 19 November 2023
The Indian government is expected to face a surplus of rice stock once again due to robust paddy procurement and limited sales of rice from the Food Corporation of India (FCI). This surplus is likely to be more than twice the buffer requirement by the end of the procurement season. For this issue, the government needs to offload the excess rice, potentially through the allocation of the stock to the poor during the next year's election.
