UK to levy carbon tax on steel, aluminium from 2027
Monday, 18 December 2023
The UK plans to implement a carbon border tax from 2027 on imports of iron, steel, aluminium, ceramics, and cement, following the European Union's lead. The tax will be based on the carbon emissions associated with the production of the imported goods and the carbon price difference between the UK and the country of origin. India is expected to oppose this move as a non-tariff barrier, similar to its opposition to the carbon border adjustment mechanism introduced by the EU. Other advanced economies are also anticipated to introduce similar levies.
