Kanye West has become something of a phenomenon over the years. Haven risen to the point where he is regarded as one of the most popular musicians of his caliber, he has courted media headlines globally for a variety of reasons – from his very public relationship with Kim Kardashian to on-stage meltdowns, denying Taylor Swift a music video award and outwardly supporting US President Donald Trump, it’s safe to say that he is a figure who extolls confidence and charisma – while appearing quite the character all the same. Love him or hate him – Kanye is a pretty unique public figure.
It’s the Trump affiliation that has perhaps garnered the star the most controversy over the past year, with the US President having acknowledged the rapper’s support on Twitter (the moment itself giving birth to the ‘Thank you Kanye, very cool’ meme). West had appeared in conversation with Jimmy Kimmel on national TV over the weekend to discuss matters such as his political affiliations – and the star observed that ‘everyone around (him) tried to pick (his) candidate for (him)’. The discussion turned to the matter of West’s infamous message during George W Bush’s tenure as US President, whereby he advised the world that the then-President didn’t ‘care about black people’.
Kimmel took the opportunity to readdress the moment in line with West’s current affiliations, some 13 years on. “What makes you think that Donald Trump does (care about black people) – or any people at all,” asked the host – leading to what appeared to be an awkward silence from West, and a prompted commercial break. West has since taken the moment to task, having observed on Twitter that he hadn’t been given time to answer the question – and that he wasn’t ‘stumped’. The star also advised his followers on Twitter that he and Kimmel ‘had a great time having a dialogue’ – referring to claims that he was unsure of how to answer as ‘clickbait’.

West’s support for Trump is hardly a secret – he’s worn the fabled red hat and said as much and more besides – and it appears that this recent moment suggests he’s not about to let his allegiance slip.
