A massive tunnel collapse in Wilmington, Los Angeles triggered a high-stakes rescue mission as 31 workers were trapped deep underground — some nearly 6 miles from the only access point. The tunnel, still under construction and designed to carry wastewater, gave way late Wednesday night.
LAFD deployed over 100 personnel, including specialized confined-space rescue units, to navigate debris-filled passages and pitch-black tunnels. Some workers had to scramble over mounds of loose soil to reach safety. Thanks to relentless efforts, all 31 trapped workers were pulled out alive — a true miracle under the city.
Mayor Karen Bass confirmed the successful rescue and praised the emergency teams’ rapid response. This is a chilling reminder of the hidden dangers beneath our cities — and the heroes ready to face them.
