Death row inmate makes last-ditch plea to return to home country
Friday, 20 December 2024 A Frenchman who is on death row in Indonesia has made a last-ditch plea to return home - as the country's new president plans to pardon 44,000 prisoners.
Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina inmate on death row in Indonesia, leaves the Jakarta women's penitentiary for the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport before flying home to Manila, after the government signed an agreement with Manila this month to repatriate her.

France, Indonesia evacuate citizens stranded in Israel and Iran
More than 100 French citizens were evacuated from Israel to Cyprus on Tuesday after being stranded there as the war with Iran broke out. Close to 100 Indonesian nationals in Iran were also successfully repatriated as Jakarta plans to carry out further evacuation missions.

A limestone quarry in Indonesia’s West Java province collapsed on Friday, killing at least 13 people and injuring a dozen others. Authorities fear more may still be buried under the rubble. The rescue mission, involving excavators and volunteers, was halted due to unstable soil and will resume Saturday. Governor Dedi Mulyadi ordered the permanent closure of this and four similar unsafe mining sites. This is the quarry’s second collapse this year, highlighting growing concerns over mining safety in the Southeast Asian archipelago.
