The unplanned call that sealed PM's deal with Trump - and the bigger challenge he now faces
Thursday, 8 May 2025 VE Day with a packed diary was perhaps not the moment the prime minister would have chosen to announce he'd sealed a trade deal with Donald Trump.
Crowds in Washington, D.C. erupted in anger as Trump’s federal agents faced relentless boos and chants of “Go home, fascists!” during a tense confrontation with protesters. The scene unfolded amid mounting anti-Trump demonstrations, with thousands flooding the streets to denounce the administration’s actions. Witnesses described a charged atmosphere as activists shouted down the agents, forcing them to retreat under heavy police protection.

The United States has temporarily lifted certain sanctions on Russian transactions to facilitate historic peace talks in Alaska between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Aug. 15. The move, authorized by the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, allows specific transactions otherwise banned under Russia-related sanctions—strictly for organizing the summit.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may join follow-up discussions, with Trump expected to push Putin toward a Ukraine ceasefire. Reports suggest Trump will offer an economic package including access to Alaska’s natural resources, easing aviation sanctions, and rare earth mineral rights in occupied Ukrainian territories. The temporary authorization expires Aug. 20, with the White House calling the meeting a “listening exercise” and a potential breakthrough.

In a dramatic and unprecedented move, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved major airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen while flying to the United States aboard the “Wing of Zion” aircraft. According to the PM’s office, Netanyahu received critical operational updates and gave the final go-ahead for "Operation Black Flag" while en route to Washington for a high-stakes meeting with Donald Trump. The operation was launched in response to continuous missile attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis on Israel. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that the strikes, involving 20 fighter jets, targeted key Houthi infrastructure, ports in Hudaydah, and the Galaxy Leader ship, which was seized by the Houthis in 2023. The coordinated attack is being described as a major blow to the Houthi rebels. The Houthis have responded swiftly and fiercely. While their media outlets confirmed the Israeli strikes, they retaliated by launching a massive wave of missiles towards Israel, triggering air defense systems across the country. In a claim that has created serious panic, RT News reported that at least one of the Houthi missiles successfully hit its target inside Israel.
This sudden escalation opens a dangerous new front in the Middle East, coming only weeks after a fragile ceasefire was established between Israel and Iran. With Israel now engaged in a direct, full-blown conflict with the Houthis in Yemen, the entire region is on high alert for what happens next.
