Home Secretary pledges new powers to target foreign intelligence agencies seeking to recruit 'criminals and misfits'
Monday, 19 May 2025 The Home Secretary has pledged to introduce new powers to ban foreign intelligence agencies seeking to recruit "criminals, proxy groups, misfits and private investigators" in the UK.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper insisted the UK-France return deal would “fundamentally undermine” the smugglers organising the crossings.
Under the pilot scheme, for each small boat migrant sent back across the English Channel, an asylum seeker will be allowed to enter the UK from France under a legal route.

The home secretary says the government inherited a "broken" immigration system in which there was an increase of visas being issued without "proper checks and systems in place". Yvette Cooper's comments come after a cross-party committee of MPs said the Home Office had failed to check whether foreign workers were leaving the UK or staying to work illegally. Yvette Cooper says crimes like shoplifting have "gone up far too high in recent years" and that they "haven't been taken seriously enough". The home secretary has announced that hundreds of towns will see an increased police presence to crack down on theft and anti-social behaviour. Report by Brooksl. The Home Secretary has admitted there is "an issue with confidence in the immigration system and frankly, quite understandably". It comes as more than 1,100 migrants arrived in the UK after crossing the English Channel on Saturday, the highest number recorded so far in 2025.
