PM could lift controversial benefit cap in budget - as Farage makes two big election promises
Saturday, 24 May 2025 () Sir Keir Starmer could decide to lift the two-child benefit cap in the autumn budget, amid further pressure from Nigel Farage to appeal to traditional Labour voters.
Sir Keir Starmer hosted a meeting of the Council of Nations and Regions before holding separate talks with First Ministers on Friday. MPs including Reform's Andrea Jenkyns and Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham hailed the talks as "really constructive" as they departed Downing Street.

Keir Starmer’s government is facing strong criticism after agreeing to a deal that allows EU fishing vessels continued access to UK waters for 12 more years. Scottish fishermen and politicians have slammed the agreement as a betrayal, calling it a “horror show” that endangers local communities and the fishing industry. The Scottish Government and opposition parties accuse UK ministers of ignoring devolved consent and sacrificing fishermen’s interests for political gain. Critics warn the deal risks harming coastal economies and undermines post-Brexit sovereignty.

Britain and the EU have announced a sweeping reset in their post-Brexit relationship, covering trade, defence, and mobility. The deal allows UK participation in a €150B EU defence program, cuts red tape on food exports, simplifies travel, and opens joint military procurement to firms like BAE and Rolls-Royce. Prime Minister Keir Starmer calls the agreement a step toward stability and prosperity, projecting a £9B boost to the UK economy by 2040. While critics like Nigel Farage slam it as a betrayal, the reset signals a pivot to practical cooperation over political division.

Nigel Farage says Reform UK "very much enjoyed" Sir Keir Starmer's remarks on immigration and an 'island of migrants', which critics have likened to Enoch Powell's 'Rivers of Blood' speech in 1968. Reform's party leader urges the prime minister to declare the situation in the English Channel as a national security emergency. Starmer replies that the government's borders bill will allow law enforcement to take action "before crimes are committed", adding it is "extraordinary" that Farage "of all people, voted against it".
