The bodies of more than 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers returned to Kyiv after prisoner swap
Saturday, 14 June 2025 More than 1,000 Ukrainian bodies have been handed back to Kyiv after a prisoner-of-war exchange - as Volodymyr Zelenskyy renews calls for sanctions.
Russia has returned the bodies of 1,212 Ukrainian soldiers, a massive and grim delivery meant to showcase battlefield dominance. In return, Ukraine handed over just 27 Russian dead — a disparity now fuelling political and propaganda warfare.

Ukraine launched overnight strikes on key Russian oil refineries and military targets in a fierce act of retaliation after a devastating Russian missile barrage on Kyiv killed 14 people, including children. The Ukrainian military confirmed direct hits on the Kuibyshev refinery in Samara Oblast and the Afipsky refinery in Krasnodar Krai, crippling Russia’s vital fuel infrastructure. Explosions lit up the night as Ukrainian forces struck deep into Russian territory, signaling a dangerous escalation in the conflict. The strikes came just hours after Russian missiles reduced Kyiv neighborhoods to rubble, leaving families shattered. Analysts warn the attacks mark a new phase of Ukraine’s war strategy—targeting the heart of Russia’s energy economy to undermine its war machine. With Moscow vowing retaliation and Kyiv showing no signs of backing down, fears are rising that the war is spiraling into an even bloodier chapter.

US Vice President J.D. Vance has defended his fiery Oval Office clash with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, calling the February confrontation “useful” for Americans to witness. The heated exchange erupted during Zelensky’s Washington visit to secure a deal over Ukraine’s mineral resources. When Donald Trump explained his decision to stay neutral and pursue diplomacy with Moscow instead of ramping up military aid, Zelensky accused him of speaking from the safety of “a nice ocean.” Vance shot back, calling the remark “disrespectful,” and Trump told Zelensky not to lecture Americans. Vance later argued that years of unchecked aid under Joe Biden lacked strategy and failed to advance peace. He said the episode exposed Washington’s frustrations and underlined Trump’s push for a settlement with Moscow. The clash has become a flashpoint in US-Ukraine relations, showing cracks in support for Kyiv as Trump courts a diplomatic end to the war.

Donald Trump has issued his toughest warning yet to Russia, threatening an “economic war” if President Vladimir Putin refuses to agree to a Ukraine ceasefire. Speaking after his Alaska meeting with Putin, Trump said he will not allow a world war but promised devastating sanctions that could crippleRussia’s economy. He also shocked reporters by suggesting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is “not exactly innocent either.” With Ukraine talks collapsing, Trump’s remarks could reshape the fragile balance of war and diplomacy in Europe.

Donald Trump declared that the U.S. is no longer directly paying Ukraine but instead profits from arms sales routed through NATO allies. Speaking at the White House, Trump emphasized that NATO partners fund and supply ammunition to Kyiv, while the U.S. benefits from the transactions. He praised President Zelensky, calling him “the greatest salesman,” during their second meeting this year. Trump’s remarks signal a shift in Washington’s Ukraine strategy, stressing NATO’s financial burden and America’s transactional approach to global security.
