Army chief General Rawat becomes chairman of powerful tri-services committee

Army chief General Bipin Rawat on Friday took charge as Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) from outgoing IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa. In a landmark military reform, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15 announced that India will have a chief of defence staff (CDS) as head of the tri-services, a proposal pending since the Kargil conflict in 1999.

PM Modi makes surprise visit to Ladakh amid border tension with China

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 03 made a surprise visit to Ladakh. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane. He reached Nimu, early morning and interacted with Army, Air Force and ITBP personnel. PM was briefed by senior officers at a forward position in Nimu amid ongoing tension with China. Earlier, the Defence Minister was scheduled to visit Ladakh today to review the preparedness of the Army amid the ongoing standoff with China. The situation at the India-China border remains tensed after 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives in a violent face-off in the Galwan valley on June 15-16.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has built three bridges near Leh which facilitated Indian Army's tank movement during stand-off along Line of Actual Control (LAC). This bridge has been made in a record time of three months. It is capable of carrying any sort of load which will cause no hindrance in the traffic." When asked about frequent Chinese objections to road construction activities in Ladakh sector, he added, "BRO has nothing to do with objections as we do whatever assignment is given to us."
