‘Selective amnesia’: EC rebuts ex-CEC Quraishi on its handling of hate speech
Saturday, 15 February 2020 SY Quraishi, who led EC from 2010 to 2012, had in an opinion piece published in a daily on February 8, 2020, wondered why EC had stopped short of filing FIRs against Union minister Anurag Thakur and BJP MP Parvesh Verma for hate speech. The EC accused ex-CEC SY Quraishi of “selective amnesia”, highlighting that none of model code violation cases he had himself handled as CEC, resulted in FIRs.
Speaking on the Roshni land scam, Union Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Anurag Thakur on November 24 stated that people associated with Gupkar alliance have robbed Jammu and Kashmir for years when they were in power. He said, "People associated with Gupkar alliance have robbed JandK for years while in power. This might be the biggest land grab scam in the entire country. In the past 30-40 years, a gang of people has been capturing the govt and vacant land." Earlier, the JandK High Court had ordered Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the scam involving government land encroachment under the Roshni scheme.
Ahead Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, Bharatiya Janata Party president Jagat Prakash Nadda held a massive roadshow from Nagole Chowrasta to Kothapet Chowrasta in Hyderabad on November 27. He was accompanied by Minister of State for Home Affairs, G Kishan Reddy. However, COVID-19 norms were floated during the roadshow. Voting for GHMC elections will be held on December 01.
Dilip Ghosh, president of BJP's West Bengal unit, trained his guns on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the poll campaign picks up pace. Ghosh said Banerjee gets terrified whenever senior BJP leaders like PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah visit the state. He was reacting to the Trinamool Congress chief calling BJP leaders 'outsiders' following Shah's recent trip. Ghosh also repeated his charge that the TMC is turning Bengal into Bangladesh. A day earlier, Union minister Rajnath Singh said that the BJP may even end up winning a 2/3rd majority in the state. He was speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit. Sikh organisations staged a protest march under the aegis of Sri Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar on November 07. The march was headed to the Golden Temple, over their demand for FIRs against Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) employees regarding 328 missing holy 'saroops' of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
A day after Shaurya Chakra awardee Balwinder Singh Sandhu was assassinated in Punjab, his wife, Jagdish Kaur, blamed the government and intelligence agencies for not paying heed to the several appeals that they made for security. She said, “There are 42 registered FIRs on attacks on our family and countless other attacks have taken place which are not on record. Withdrawal of security was wrong.” She added, “Those who treat security cover as a status symbol have been provided with it. We actually needed it but were not given.” The 62-year-old Sandhu, who fought terrorism in Punjab, was shot dead in the district on October 16, months after the government withdrew his security cover. The motorcycle-borne men pumped four bullets into him when he was at his office adjoining his home at Bhikhiwind. Watch the full video for more details.
