Ruling TMC in West Bengal alleged that BJP is sending BSF to threaten voters in border areas. TMC leader Firhad Hakim made the statement following a meeting with the Election Commission. Meanwhile, BJP's Dilip Ghosh said they have urged EC for the deployment of central forces during polls. Ghosh added that BJP informed EC about the abnormal rise in the number of voters. The full bench of EC, led by CEC Sunil Arora, arrived in the state on Wednesday evening. EC officials are on a three-day visit to Bengal ahead of the state assembly polls. Elections to 294 Assembly seats in Bengal are scheduled to take place in next few months.

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said that maximum number of electors at a polling station has been reduced from 1500 to 1000 in Assam. "In view of Covid social distancing norms, the Commission has specifically revisited some extant norms. As a result, the maximum number of electors at a polling station has been reduced from 1500 to 1000," he said.
An adult male rhino was immobilised and shifted to Assam State Zoo in Guwahati on January 19. Rhino had strayed out of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) on January 16. It was spotted in Bamunipam and was successfully guided inside the park.

'Bhogali Bihu' is the harvest festival in Assam and is celebrated by the Assamese people in the local month of Magh. The Indian Army Chief MM Naravane attended '25 years of Army Industry - Partnership' in Delhi on January 21. Today self-reliance in Defence has become a strategic necessity. It is imperative for us to invest in building long term indigenous capabilities for application across the entire spectrum of conflict," said the Army Chief. He also said, "Considering the quick pace of Defence modernisation being undertaken by our adversaries, we are lagging behind slightly. Continuous and heavy dependence of Indian armed forces on equipment of foreign origin needs to be addressed through indigenous capability development."
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that the government has identified more than 1,100 schools for National Cadet Corps (NCC) training in the border and coastal areas of India. Singh was speaking at the annual National Cadet Corps rally at NCC Parade Ground in Delhi on January 21. "Our Prime Minister has decided to expand the National Cadet Corps. There should be training of cadets at the border and coastal areas. We have identified more than 1,100 schools to begin NCC training. The participation of girls cadets in NCC has also increased from 28 per to 33 per cent. We are moving towards women's empowerment through NCC," he said. “The cadets played a tremendous role in the second line of defence. I have seen how cadets have helped armed forces during rescue operations,” he added. Watch the full video for more.
