Ban constructions within 250m of landslide zones in Uttarakhand: NDMA

IndiaTimes Thursday, 28 September 2023
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has released a Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) report with recommendations for subsidence-hit towns in Uttarakhand. The report suggests that no construction should be allowed within 250m of landslide areas and up to 50m on either side of seismic fault lines. It also recommends a maximum building height of 7.5m in hilly areas and the use of slope roofs in 50% of houses. The report calls for a complete ban on new construction in Joshimath until the end of the monsoon season and suggests retrofitting old buildings with prefab structures for critical emergency services. The NDMA also recommends regular monitoring of the area and the installation of a ground-based early warning system. Additionally, the report suggests expediting the construction of the Helang-Marwari bypass project to reduce traffic in Joshimath.
