IIT-Bombay protester fined Rs 10,000 for eating non-vegetarian food at ‘veg-only’ table

IndiaTimes Monday, 2 October 2023
The mess council of hostels 12, 13, and 14 at IIT-Bombay has fined a student Rs 10,000 for eating non-vegetarian food in the vegetarian section of the mess. The student was protesting against the segregation of eating places. Two other students will also face disciplinary action. The Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle has criticized the hostel administration for upholding untouchability. The council meeting, attended by professors and student representatives, found evidence that the student deliberately disrupted the peace and harmony within the mess. The decision to set aside tables for vegetarian food had raised concerns of discrimination.
