Haryana DGP to HC: Impossible not to mention religion of accused in FIRs & proceedings

IndiaTimes Thursday, 5 October 2023
The Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) has issued an order for field staff to not mention the religion of suspects, accused individuals, or informants in FIRs or police proceedings, except in specific criminal cases. The religion will still be mentioned in cases related to rioting, hurting religious sentiments, and desecration of places of worship. The police claim that mentioning the religion of suspects is helpful for apprehending them later if they become fugitives. The DGP submitted a formal affidavit in response to a petition challenging the practice of mentioning religion in FIRs.
