Sikkim flash floods: Kid dies as mortar that was washed away bursts on being picked up

IndiaTimes Friday, 6 October 2023
An eight-year-old boy died and six others were injured when a mortar shell they had collected from the Teesta riverbank exploded at their home in Jalpaiguri. The victims, who were from fisherfolk families, had found the shells and taken them home, unaware of the danger. One of the shells exploded when hit with an axe, causing the death and injuries. Police have seized three other shells, believed to have come from an Army camp in north Sikkim that was washed away by recent floods. Authorities have issued a public alert urging people not to touch any floating boxes, arms, or ammunition they may find.
