Ensuring adequate number of air traffic controllers as air traffic grows: Government
Wednesday, 25 October 2023 India is preparing to reduce the lateral separation between aircraft and handle more air traffic by ensuring an adequate number of air traffic control officers (ATCO). The state-run Airports Authority of India (AAI) is working to reduce the current separation of 10 nautical miles (18 km) between aircraft by about half over the next year. The country aims to have 42.5 crore air passengers annually by 2035, and the number of airports is expected to increase to 230-240 by 2030. The aviation ministry has created 796 positions of ATCOs since July 2021 to ensure safe navigation services.
