Malaria cases in city rise 62%, make up 46% of state’s tally

IndiaTimes Monday, 4 December 2023
Mumbai has seen a significant rise in malaria cases and dengue cases this year. The increase in vector activity, influenced by factors such as weather, climate conditions, and ongoing infrastructure upgrades, has contributed to this trend. While the correlation with pollution is uncertain, it is clear that climate change is recognized as a growing threat in the battle against malaria. The World Malaria Report 2023 highlights India as a major hotspot for malaria cases and deaths, with a concentration of cases in the South-East Asian region. Efforts to control the vectors are hindered by unseasonal rainfall, and manmade factors such as untreated wells and water storage tanks. Despite these challenges, there has been a decrease in malaria deaths compared to last year, and measures are being taken to enhance the management of critical malaria and dengue cases.
