JN.1 Covid-19 ‘variant of interest’: India detects 21 cases across three states | Oneindia News
As the nation sees another surge in Covid cases, a new sub-variant of the virus, identified as JN.1, is making headlines with 21 reported cases across different states.
The sub-variant, a descendant of the Omicron lineage, has swiftly spread, with cases confirmed in the states of Goa, Kerala, and Maharashtra.
Goa leads the count with 19 reported cases, while Kerala and Maharashtra have each reported one case of the JN.1 sub-variant.

India has crossed 7,000 active COVID-19 cases, with Kerala reporting the highest spike and three new deaths. The XFG variant, a sub-lineage of Omicron with strong immune evasion, has been detected across the country, raising global alarm. Originating in Canada, the variant carries four spike protein mutations. Globally, SARS-CoV-2 activity is rising, especially in South-East Asia and Eastern Mediterranean regions, with test positivity rates matching last year’s peak. WHO continues to monitor the spread amid poor ICU and hospitalization data from heavily affected regions.
