Tiger sighted at 3,640 metres, highest point in India yet
Saturday, 9 December 2023 A tiger has been spotted at an altitude of 3,640 metres in a Sikkim sanctuary, making it the highest point at which the animal has been sighted in India. Trap cameras placed at Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary captured the image, revealing the existence of a potential tiger corridor. The sanctuary serves as a corridor for tigers entering the forests of north Sikkim from Bhutan. This sighting is the highest altitude tiger sighting in India and the first record from the higher reaches of Pangolakha.
It said that severe heatwave conditions likely over coastal Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and isolated pockets of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, as well.. DNA
Polling in 102 parliamentary seats across 21 states and Union Territories in the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections commenced at 7 am on April 19 and ended at 6 pm. Over 102 parliamentary constituencies in 21 states and union territories headed to the polling booth on Friday, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. West Bengal recorded the highest turnout till 5 PM at 77.57 per cent, followed by Tripura at 76.10 per cent. Voter turnout in Assam stood at 70.77 per cent, while Manipur recorded a voter turnout of 68.58 per cent till 5 PM.

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday named six former Congress MLAs, disqualified from the House, as its candidates for the Himachal Pradesh Assembly bypolls. The BJP on Tuesday named its candidates for the Assembly bypolls in several states, including Gujarat, Sikkim, West Bengal and Karnataka. The party has fielded the six MLAs from the seats they held as Congress members before their disqualification.
