Rajasthan: Communities start lobbying for cabinet berths for their MLAs
Sunday, 10 December 2023 Caste-based groups like Rajputs, Jats, Brahmins, and Gujjars are rallying behind their leaders to secure cabinet berths in the new government in Rajasthan. Rajput bodies are demanding a Rajput chief minister and more ministerial seats for the community. The Brahmin community also seeks representation, with 10 Brahmins winning the polls. The Jat community, being the largest in the state, expects at least five Jats in the ministry and is pushing for a Jat CM. Kirori Lal Meena's name is trending as a potential CM candidate.
Heavy rains hit eastern Rajasthan, with lighter showers elsewhere, causing temperatures to drop by up to 4°C across the state. Dausa received the highest rainfall at 20 cm. A cyclonic circulation over north-west Uttar Pradesh is influencing the monsoon trough line, which now passes through Ganganagar and Jaipur. The Jaipur Meteorological Centre predicts continued rainfall in eastern Rajasthan and parts of Bikaner division for the next 4-5 days.

A tragic stampede occurred at a spiritual gathering in Hathras, organized by Sakar Vishwa Hari Bhole Baba. The incident happened as crowds were leaving, resulting in about 90 deaths. Bhole Baba, formerly Suraj Pal, quit his job 17 years ago to become a spiritual leader. He has millions of followers, mainly from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. The group maintains distance from media and manages events independently. Baba's whereabouts are unknown since the incident.

The Congress party has scripted a comeback story, almost doubling its 2019 tally, as it leads in at least 97 seats and claims victory in Jalandhar. The power fight by the INDIA bloc was also led by the Samajwadi Party, which currently has the highest number of leads (35) in Uttar Pradesh. The stakes are high for the Opposition, which has consolidated into the INDIA bloc, and is looking to upset the NDA’s tally. The Opposition has dismissed the exit poll predictions, reposing its faith in “people’s polls”.As of 2.50 pm, in a neck-and-neck fight, the NDA was leading in 290 seats, while the INDIA bloc was ahead in 234. An interesting trend to note is the Congress’s performance in Rajasthan, where it looks set to end its dry run. It is currently leading in eight seats out of 25 seats. In Haryana, too, the Congress is looking at a comeback, having lost all seats to the BJP in 2019. Out of 10 Lok Sabha seats, the Congress is consistently leading on six seats in Haryana.
