Increase RT-PCR tests, Centre advises states

IndiaTimes Monday, 18 December 2023
The Union health secretary has urged states to monitor and report ILI and SARI cases and increase RT-PCR tests. Positive samples should be sent for genome sequencing to detect new variants. JN.1 variant, a descendant of the Pirola lineage, has significant mutations and has been reported in multiple countries. The health secretary states that current RT-PCR tests are effective for JN.1 detection. Symptoms of JN.1 infection are similar to other variants. The government reassures that JN.1 does not pose increased risk or severity and updated vaccines provide protection.

This Day in History: , The Civil War Begins. April 12, 1861. Union-held Fort Sumter in Charleston Bay, SC, is attacked by Confederate shore batteries under the command of General P.G.T. Beauregard. After being battered for 34 straight hours, U.S. Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort. U.S. President Abraham Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteer soldiers two days later. He had been in office for barely more than a month. South Carolina, a slave state, had issued an "Ordinance of Secession" earlier in December, dissolving its ties with the Union.
