Drainage work in Mysuru’s Varuna unearths 11th century Jain sculptures

Drainage work on Ambedkar Road in Varuna town, Mysuru district, unearthed three Jain sculptures from the 11th century AD. The sculptures, including an idol of goddess Kushmandini Devi and two Jain Tirthankaras, were found at a depth of three feet. The artefacts have been conserved at the city museum for further investigation. Manjula CN, the director of the Karnataka Department of Archaeology, Museums, and Heritage, instructed officials to move the sculptures to the museum for conservation. NS Rangaraju highlighted the need for archaeological excavations in Varuna, Muguru, T Narasipura, Hemmige, and other localities that were once important Jain centers.
