'Canada is a rule-of-law country': Trudeau after arrest of 3 Indians in Nijjar murder case
Sunday, 5 May 2024 Following the arrest of three Indian nationals in a case involving the execution of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a terrorist recognized by India, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated on Saturday that Canada is a "rule-of-law country". "Every Canadian has the fundamental right to live safely and free from discrimination and threats of violence in Canada," he added.
Canadian police said on Friday (May 3) that three Indian men were arrested and charged with the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner David Teboul said they were probing whether the men had ties to the Indian government.
Mark Carney has secured a new term as Prime Minister, leading the Liberal Party to its fourth consecutive victory in the 2025 Canadian federal election. Early projections confirm that the Liberals, under Carney’s leadership, have outpaced Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives in a closely fought race shaped by economic concerns and foreign policy tensions, particularly with the United States. Carney, who took over from Justin Trudeau earlier this year, steered the party through a dramatic comeback fueled by a surge in national unity after controversial comments by U.S. President Donald Trump. Voter turnout reached historic levels, with nearly 29 million Canadians eligible to cast ballots.

Trump has announced a 25% tariff increase on Canadian steel and aluminum, escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa. The decision comes just days after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned of potential economic fallout from U.S. trade policies. Trump justified the move by citing the need to protect American industries and jobs, while Canada has strongly condemned the tariffs as "unfair and harmful" to North American trade relations. Experts warn this could lead to retaliatory measures from Canada, further straining economic ties between the two nations.
