For nearly five years, officials from a Chennai panchayat misappropriated government funds meant for infrastructure, forging documents for non-existent projects and doubling bills. The 2006 audit exposed these discrepancies, leading to suspensions and legal action. The Chengalpet court sentenced the accused to one year in prison and a fine of ₹10,000 for each, with an additional month if unpaid.
