High court sets 6-week deadline for MP to clear Union Carbide waste
Monday, 6 January 2025 Madhya Pradesh high court has given the state government six weeks to safely dispose of 337 metric tonnes of Union Carbide waste, with the state seeking three days for unloading. Concerns arose from the public and medical groups regarding the disposal's safety, calling for a new trial run. The court also urged media to avoid spreading unverified information.
Bhopal's toxic legacy, tied to the 1984 industrial disaster, has haunted the city for decades. The hazardous waste, stored for years at the Union Carbide factory, is now being moved for safe disposal to Pithampur. This long-awaited step raises important questions about accountability, transparency, and the safety of residents in Pithampur, where a specialized facility will neutralize the toxins. However, scrutiny remains over the government's delayed action and the risks involved in the process.
