‘Kavaru’ presence in Kochi backwaters raises environment concerns

Bioluminescent phenomenon 'kavaru' is being observed in Kochi's backwaters attracting locals. High salt content is the cause. However, it indicates harmful algae blooms, releasing biotoxins harmful to fish and shellfish, making them unsafe for consumption. Studies show increasing occurrences from 2015 to 2021.
