85L farmers quit agri sector from 2001 to 2011, 1.3L of them from Punjab

Punjab and Haryana have seen a significant reduction in the number of farmers between 2001 and 2011, with 1.30 lakh and 5.37 lakh farmers leaving agriculture respectively. The trend is attributed to industrial job opportunities and urbanization. The government is encouraging diversification through schemes to make agriculture more profitable.
