Tensions are rising between Thailand and Cambodia after Phnom Penh confirmed that only 2 of the 20 Cambodian soldiers captured at the O'Smach border checkpoint have been released by Thai forces. One soldier has reportedly returned dead, leaving 18 still under Thai control. The Cambodian Ministry of Defense has called for the immediate return of all detained soldiers, invoking international humanitarian law and vowing to avoid another armed escalation.
“We will not allow war to break out again,” the Cambodian Defense Ministry insisted in a bold statement, but also issued a strong appeal to Bangkok to return not just the 18 remaining soldiers, but also others reportedly held under Thai custody. The clash that led to these captures has sparked fears of renewed tensions in the already sensitive border region. Diplomatic efforts are now being urged at the highest level to prevent a repeat of history.

Thailand has fiercely rejected Cambodia’s accusation that its military bombed the Preah Vihear Temple—a UNESCO World Heritage site—amid intensifying border clashes. Bangkok calls Phnom Penh’s claims a “distortion of facts” and “politically motivated,” denying any damage to cultural or civilian zones. Cambodia alleges air and artillery strikes caused major destruction, violating international law. The 11th-century temple, long contested, is now a flashpoint fueling nationalist tensions as both sides trade blame and the risk of escalation continues to mount.

Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has warned that violent border clashes with Cambodia could escalate into full-scale war. With over 16 dead, and more than 100,000 civilians displaced, the disputed border has become a dangerous flashpoint. Both nations accuse each other of violating peace deals, as Cambodia alleges Thailand used banned cluster munitions—claims Bangkok denies. As heavy weapons pound residential areas and tensions spiral, the international community faces growing calls to intervene and prevent a broader Southeast Asian war.
