Sotheby’s to auction largest Mars rock ever found on Earth in New York; here’s how it came to our planet
Monday, 14 July 2025 () A rare Martian meteorite and a dinosaur skeleton will headline Sotheby’s Geek Week 2025 auction in New York. The Martian meteorite, NWA 16788, weighs 54 pounds. It is the largest Martian rock ever found on Earth. A Ceratosaurus skeleton, over 6 feet tall, will also be auctioned. The event will feature 122 items, including rare meteorites and fossils.
The biggest piece of Mars on Earth is being auctioned off in New York
This is the first time such an historical and rare piece is auctioned off. Sotheby’s says the eventual buyer of the items is guaranteed to own a piece of history.
