In a high-stakes overnight assault, Russia unleashed a devastating missile and drone barrage on Ukraine. The attack featured Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles—some of Moscow’s most advanced and costly weapons—reportedly targeting key defense industry facilities and airbases, particularly in the Ivano-Frankivsk region where combat aircraft were said to be stationed. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed all intended targets were successfully hit. However, Ukraine countered with reports of Patriot missile systems intercepting several incoming threats, though conflicting claims persist.
The strikes also rattled Poland, which scrambled aircraft in response. With each Kinzhal missile costing nearly $10 million, the assault underscores Russia’s intent to Cripple Ukraine’s air capabilities and destroy Western-supplied equipment. But with growing doubts about the Kinzhal's maneuverability and Ukraine’s increasing interception rates, the missile’s “hypersonic” reputation faces scrutiny. Regional tensions are now on edge as both sides escalate their battle for air superiority.
