Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe, 39, a rising star in the right-wing opposition and potential 2026 presidential candidate, has died after being shot in the head during a rally in Bogota on June 7. The attack, carried out in front of supporters, left Uribe critically injured until his death was confirmed Monday by his family.
Police say five suspects have been arrested, including a 15-year-old alleged hitman, and Elder Jose Arteaga Hernandez, accused of orchestrating the plot. Authorities allege Hernandez, with a criminal history and Interpol file, arranged every stage of the attack, hiring the shooter and supplying the weapon. Colombian officials claim the killing was negotiated for around $250,000. Uribe, a member of the Democratic Center party, had announced his presidential ambitions in October last year, making his assassination a chilling blow to Colombia’s political landscape.

In an unprecedented move, Israeli Minister Itamar Ben Gvir prayed on the Temple Mount during Tisha B’Av, defying long-held protocols that prohibit overt Jewish prayer at the site. His actions sparked strong condemnation from the Palestinian Authority, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. Over 1,200 Jewish worshippers visited the contested holy site, intensifying tensions. Critics say this violated the status quo agreement. The Temple Mount, home to Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, remains a core flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Netanyahu insists policy “has not changed.”

France and Saudi Arabia are spearheading a new diplomatic push for Palestinian statehood, co-hosting a UN summit on July 28 in New York. President Macron announced France will officially recognize Palestine in September, a move hailed as “game-changing.” Dozens of nations are expected to attend, though Israel and the U.S. will boycott. European momentum for recognition is building amid Gaza war fatigue. Analysts see the conference as a major challenge to Israeli annexation efforts and U.S.-led diplomacy.

U.S. President Donald Trump has sidestepped a direct stance on the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying, "I'm looking for getting people fed right now. I think that's the number one position." His remarks come as global focus intensifies on the long-stalled peace process. Meanwhile, dozens of foreign ministers are set to gather at the U.N. for a delayed high-level conference—hosted by France and Saudi Arabia—to advance the roadmap toward a two-state solution.
Both the U.S. and Israel have boycotted the summit, with Washington calling it “a gift to Hamas.” France is pushing for global recognition of a Palestinian state by September. As the war between Israel and Hamas continues into its 22nd month—with nearly 60,000 Palestinians killed—debates around peace, recognition, and security intensify. The conference seeks to balance Israel’s security concerns with the longstanding Palestinian demand for statehood.

In a dramatic global twist, Russia has declared full support for Palestinian statehood, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reaffirming Moscow's long-standing commitment to a two-state solution. The statement comes on the heels of French President Emmanuel Macron’s bombshell announcement that France will recognize Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September — making it the first major Western power to do so. Russia, which adopted Palestine’s 1988 declaration of independence under the USSR, insists that peace in the Middle East hinges on UN Security Council resolutions and the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state. Macron’s decision has enraged Israel and the U.S., with Netanyahu calling it a “reward for terror” and Secretary of State Marco Rubio labeling it “reckless.” Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and Spain have praised the move, calling it “historic.” Over 59,000 Palestinians have died in the ongoing Gaza war, intensifying the global demand for Palestinian recognition.
