Japan to start releasing Fukushima water on Thursday
Tuesday, 22 August 2023 Japan is set to release cooling water from the Fukushima power plant into the sea, despite opposition from fishermen and protests from China. The water, which has accumulated at the plant over the past 12 years, is said to be safe according to Japan and the UN atomic agency. Environmental group Greenpeace, however, argues that the filtration process is flawed and that large amounts of radioactive material will be dispersed into the sea.
The release of wastewater from Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific will begin on Thursday, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announces, despite opposition from fishermen and protests by China.
