University of North Carolina graduate student charged in killing of faculty advisor denied bond

A University of North Carolina graduate student, Tailei Qi, has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of his faculty advisor, Zijie Yan. The attack led to a lockdown of the campus while police searched for the gunman. The motive for the attack is still unknown. Yan was described as a beloved colleague, mentor, and friend. Qi was listed as a graduate student in Yan's research group. The university canceled classes following the incident.
