Maldives president runoff on September 30, pro-China opposition candidate leads

Maldivians will participate in a runoff poll on September 30 after no candidate secured over 50% of the votes in the first round. Main opposition candidate Mohamed Muiz received over 46% of the votes, while incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih got 39%. The election is seen as a referendum on whether India or China will have more influence in the country.
