King Charles III seeks to look ahead to his visit to Kenya, but first have to confront past
Sunday, 29 October 2023 King Charles III is facing calls to address the legacy of British colonial rule as he embarks on his first state visit to Kenya. The visit comes at a time when the UK is under pressure to reexamine its history of colonialism and apologize for its role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Behind the history and symbolism, the UK is keen to strengthen its modern relationship with Kenya, including cooperation on counterterrorism and efforts to boost trade.
King Charles embarked on a significant four-day state visit to Kenya, his first to a former colony. During the visit, he aims to acknowledge the "painful aspects" of the shared history, marked by nearly seven decades of colonial rule. Buzz60’s Maria Mercedes Galuppo has the story.
