Inside the NATO base near Russia's border that's the eyes and ears of Europe's defence
Wednesday, 9 April 2025 Along the thin strip of beach and woodland known as the Vistula Spit which marks the northernmost demarcation between Poland and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, there is not much in the way of a border.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing, delivering a stark warning that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is unacceptable. While supporting Ukraine’s EU ambitions, Fico emphasized that NATO’s doors must remain closed, signaling growing tensions between Kyiv, Moscow, and European capitals. The meeting also touched on energy security, WWII memorial cooperation, and Russia’s ongoing responses to strikes on its infrastructure. Fico’s remarks have sparked debates across Europe as Zelensky’s NATO hopes face renewed challenges.

At the SCO Summit, a powerful moment unfolded as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping engaged in a private and seemingly warm conversation. Xi immediately called for his interpreter after the photo-op, ensuring a lengthy and precise exchange with Putin while other world leaders lined up for the traditional family photo. Their relaxed smiles suggested not just diplomacy, but a bond strengthening at a time of rising global tensions. The interaction is already being seen as symbolic of a deepening Russia-China axis, potentially unsettling the West. Observers note that this visible show of unity comes as U.S. and NATO seek to counter both Moscow and Beijing’s influence. For many, it was more than just small talk—it was a message of strategic alignment, one that could shift the global balance of power.

Ukraine has issued a stark warning to Belarus amid fears that upcoming Russia-Belarus joint military drills could escalate the war. The Zapad-2025 exercises, set for September, will feature drones, electronic warfare, and Russia’s Oreshnik hypersonic missile—previously compared to a low-yield nuclear strike. Kyiv fears Belarus may provide direct support to Russia, with the border just 100 km away. NATO has responded with 30,000 troops deployed near Poland’s border, while Moscow accuses NATO of using the drills as a pretext for escalation.
