Riot police fired tear gas, water cannon and stun grenades at so-called "yellow vest" protesters on Saturday (December 1) when they tried to breach security cordons on the Champs Elysees boulevard in Paris.
French police say 60 people had been arrested amid concerns that violent far-right and far-left groups were infiltrating the movement.
The "yellow vests" are a spontaneous rebellion against diesel tax hikes and the overall cost of living.
The group have blocked roads in protests across France for over two weeks - making them one of the greatest challenges Emmanuel Macron has faced in his 18-month-long stint as president.
