Thai restaurant owners donate food to people struggling financially amid COVID-19 tourism downturn

The owners of restaurants in Pattaya, Thailand, gathered to donate food to people struggling financially amid the coronavirus downturn.

Many businesses had no other choice but to lay off their employees after the government issued a measure to close all bars and restaurant across the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

They came up with a way to help their unfortunate employees and other needy locals by donating food on Tuesday (March 24) evening.

They were also supported by the local police station and gave away more than 2,000 meals to residents who are suffering due to the plunge in tourism, which is the main source of income for the city.

One of the owners, Natchapol Kaennakham, said the event was held to provide aid for people who were suffering financially because of the coronavirus.

He said: "Many workers were laid off after the government ordered to every crowded place to close.

We have also been forced to close.

"Some of them are hungry and have no money now.

Losing their jobs could mean starvation for them so we want to help ease their problems as much as we could.

"We will do this for four days in different areas each day.

Hopefully this will help the needy during this hard time."
