Athens State University staff test positive for coronavirus

Three employees at athens state university are in quarantine after testing positive for coronavirus.

This comes after employees and even some students returned to campus for summer sessions.

Waay31's megan reyna visited the university today to see what's being done to help stop the spread.

The university started implementing these health check-points -- the same time people started to return to campus.

However -- a university spokesperson told me even with this precaution -- they knew eventually coronavirus would make its way here.

Latham says:"none of those cases originated on campus, so they were exposed to it off campus."

Chris latham with athens state university says the school prepared the best it could for positive cases.

Right now -- 3 employees are at home with coronavirus.

Latham says:"this is something that we have been anticipating with the number of cases rising in alabama, so we're actually grateful for only having a few cases and we hope that those are isolated."

The school started check points to check people for symptoms at both campus entrances.

Everyone has their temperature taken and asked a number of screening questions by a health professional.

That person then takes down your name and hands you a wrist band.

Latham says:"that's the initial step for somebody to come on campus and we feel thats a safe-guard to keep kinda anyone from coming on campus that could potentially have covid 19 or test positive."

However -- latham understands its not going to completely stop the virus... considering asymptomatic cases.

But he's confident the university is taking as many precautions as it can to keep both faculty and students safe.

Latham says:"we have everyone's safety in mind and we have the procedures in place to protect that safety."
